As an Apprentice Commis Chef, you will work under the guidance of the Service Delivery Manager to develop foundational culinary skills in a professional kitchen environment. Your primary responsibilities include assisting with food preparation, such as chopping vegetables, portioning ingredients, and preparing basic sauces and stocks. You will support the kitchen team in maintaining a clean, organized, and safe workspace, adhering to food hygiene and safety standards at all times. Additionally, you will help with plating and presenting dishes according to established recipes and specifications, ensuring consistency and quality. You will also participate in inventory management tasks, including checking stock levels, rotating ingredients, and reporting shortages to senior staff. As part of your apprenticeship, you will engage in on-the-job training and complete coursework related to Level 2 Commis Chef standards, which covers knife skills, cooking methods, and kitchen operations. You will collaborate with chefs and other team members to ensure efficient service during meal periods, and you may be required to assist with cleaning duties, including washing dishes and sanitizing workstations. This role offers a hands-on learning experience where you will gradually take on more complex tasks as your skills develop, such as preparing simple dishes independently and contributing to menu planning discussions. You will also be expected to follow instructions precisely, communicate effectively with colleagues, and demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment.

Candidates must be aged 18 or older. A DBS check is required. No prior professional kitchen experience is necessary, but a genuine interest in culinary arts and a willingness to learn are essential. You should have basic numeracy and literacy skills to follow recipes and measure ingredients accurately. Strong attention to detail and the ability to work as part of a team are important. Physical stamina to stand for long periods and lift moderate weights (up to 15 kg) is required. Good communication skills and a positive attitude toward feedback and training are expected. You must be reliable, punctual, and committed to completing the Level 2 Commis Chef apprenticeship program.
