Operating Room Nurse Residency

The Operating Room Nurse Residency program is designed to provide a comprehensive and structured transition into perioperative nursing. As a resident, you will participate in a dedicated curriculum that combines didactic education with hands-on clinical experience. Your primary responsibility is to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care to patients undergoing surgical procedures. You will learn to prepare the operating room by setting up sterile fields, ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are available, and verifying patient identification and surgical site. Under the guidance of experienced preceptors, you will assist the surgical team by passing instruments, maintaining a sterile environment, and monitoring patient status throughout the procedure. You will also be responsible for documenting patient care accurately, including intraoperative events, medications administered, and patient responses. Post-operatively, you will assist with patient transfer to the recovery area and provide handoff communication to the post-anesthesia care unit. Throughout the residency, you will develop skills in aseptic technique, surgical instrumentation, and emergency response protocols. You will collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient outcomes. The program emphasizes critical thinking, time management, and effective communication in a fast-paced surgical environment. You will also participate in ongoing assessments and evaluations to track your progress and competency development. By the end of the residency, you will be prepared to function independently as a competent operating room nurse, capable of managing a variety of surgical cases from routine to complex.

To be considered for the Operating Room Nurse Residency, candidates must hold a current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Kentucky. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred, but an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) will be considered. New graduates or nurses with less than one year of experience are eligible. Candidates must have a strong interest in perioperative nursing and a commitment to completing the residency program. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association is required upon hire. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is preferred. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills are essential. The ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and adapt to changing priorities is necessary. Physical requirements include the ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 pounds, and perform fine motor tasks. Candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to patient safety and quality care.
