Ranger Apprentice

As a Ranger Apprentice, you will learn, train, and gain hands-on experience in professional conservation and estate management. Your primary responsibilities include assisting with the management and protection of Glencoe National Nature Reserve, a world-famous mountain landscape with diverse habitats from summit to sea level. You will support the ranger team in monitoring and maintaining the reserve's biodiversity, which is recognized by multiple designations such as Site of Special Scientific Interest. Daily tasks involve conducting habitat surveys, recording wildlife data, and assisting with conservation projects to preserve the mosaic of habitats. You will also help manage visitor impacts by patrolling the reserve, providing information to the public, and promoting responsible access. Additionally, you will participate in estate management activities, including path maintenance, fence repairs, and invasive species control. The role requires working in challenging outdoor conditions, often in remote areas, and collaborating with volunteers and partner organizations. You will contribute to educational programs and events that engage the community in conservation efforts. Through this apprenticeship, you will develop practical skills in ecological monitoring, land management, and public engagement, while gaining a deep understanding of the natural and cultural heritage of Glen Coe.

No formal qualifications are required, but a strong interest in conservation, ecology, or countryside management is essential. You should be physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions, as the role involves strenuous activities in mountainous terrain. Good communication skills are needed to interact with visitors and team members. A willingness to learn and follow instructions is crucial. A full driving license is desirable but not essential. Basic knowledge of Scottish wildlife and habitats is advantageous. You must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Previous experience in outdoor work or volunteering in conservation is beneficial but not required.
