Engineering Apprentice

As an Engineering Apprentice, you will join our locomotive maintenance team for a 36-month program where you will work alongside experienced engineers to develop practical skills in rail engineering. Your responsibilities will include assisting with the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of locomotives and associated equipment. You will learn to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical faults, perform routine inspections, and ensure all work meets safety and quality standards. You will also participate in hands-on tasks such as component replacement, system testing, and documentation of maintenance activities. Throughout the apprenticeship, you will gain exposure to various engineering disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems. You will be expected to follow strict health and safety protocols, maintain a clean and organized work environment, and collaborate effectively with team members. Additionally, you will contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency and reliability. This role requires a proactive attitude, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work under supervision while gradually taking on more responsibility as your skills develop.

To be considered for this apprenticeship, you should have a strong interest in engineering and a desire to build a career in the rail industry. You must have or be working towards GCSEs (or equivalent) in English, Mathematics, and a Science subject at grade 4/C or above. No prior experience in rail engineering is required, but any hands-on experience in mechanical or electrical work is advantageous. You should possess good problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to follow instructions accurately. Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team are essential. You must be willing to commit to a 36-month apprenticeship program that combines on-the-job training with academic study towards a Level 3 Rail Engineering qualification. A valid UK driving license or the ability to travel to the Didcot site is required.
