Apprentice Butcher

As an Apprentice Butcher, you will work in a busy farm shop butchery, learning and performing a range of tasks under the guidance of experienced butchers. Your primary responsibilities include assisting with the preparation, cutting, and trimming of various meats, such as beef, pork, lamb, and poultry, to meet customer specifications and quality standards. You will learn to operate and maintain butchery equipment, including knives, saws, and grinders, ensuring all tools are clean and safe to use. Additionally, you will help with the display and presentation of meat products in the shop, ensuring they are attractively arranged and properly labeled. You will also assist in managing inventory, including receiving deliveries, checking stock levels, and rotating products to maintain freshness. Customer service is a key part of the role; you will interact with customers, answer questions about meat cuts and preparation, and provide recommendations to meet their needs. You will also support the team in maintaining a clean and organized work environment, adhering to health and safety regulations and food hygiene standards. As you progress, you will develop skills in more advanced butchery techniques, such as boning, rolling, and tying roasts, as well as understanding the sourcing and quality of locally sourced meats. This role offers hands-on training and the opportunity to grow within a dynamic farm business environment.

No prior butchery experience is required, as full training will be provided. However, a genuine interest in butchery, meat preparation, and food quality is essential. You should be willing to learn and develop new skills in a fast-paced environment. Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions accurately are important. Good communication skills and a customer-focused attitude are necessary for interacting with customers. Physical stamina is required, as the role involves standing for long periods and lifting heavy items (up to 25 kg). Basic numeracy skills for handling inventory and pricing are beneficial. A commitment to food safety and hygiene practices is expected. Previous experience in a retail or food service environment is a plus but not mandatory. You must be reliable, punctual, and able to work as part of a team.
