Apprentice Highways Operative

As an Apprentice Highways Operative, you will be responsible for assisting in the maintenance, renewal, and improvement of highway infrastructure. Your primary duties include: Highway Maintenance: Performing routine inspections and repairs on roads, footpaths, and cycleways to ensure safety and functionality. This includes patching potholes, clearing drainage systems, and repairing barriers. Renewal Projects: Supporting the renewal of highway assets such as signage, lighting, and road markings. You will work alongside experienced operatives to learn techniques for replacing and upgrading infrastructure. Safety Compliance: Adhering to strict health and safety protocols, including using personal protective equipment (PPE), setting up traffic management systems, and following safe working practices on active roadways. Equipment Operation: Assisting in the operation and maintenance of tools and machinery, such as compactors, saws, and small plant equipment, under supervision. Team Collaboration: Working as part of a team to complete scheduled tasks efficiently, communicating with supervisors and colleagues to coordinate work activities. Learning and Development: Participating in on-the-job training and formal apprenticeship programs to develop skills in highway construction, repair techniques, and industry standards. Customer Service: Interacting with the public and clients in a professional manner, addressing queries or concerns related to highway works. Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate records of work completed, materials used, and any incidents or observations on site.

To be successful in this role, you should have: - A strong interest in highways, construction, or infrastructure maintenance. - Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team. - A willingness to learn and follow instructions from experienced operatives. - Basic numeracy and literacy skills for record keeping and understanding safety instructions. - Physical fitness to perform manual tasks, including lifting, bending, and working outdoors in various weather conditions. - No prior experience required, but any exposure to construction or manual work is beneficial. - A valid driving license may be preferred for some locations. - Commitment to completing the apprenticeship program, including attending training sessions and assessments.
