The Registered Nurse I - Nursing Internship is responsible for patient assessment, patient care planning, and the provision of quality nursing care to an assigned group of patients for a defined work period. This role involves direct patient care and coordination of care activities to ensure optimal outcomes.
Key responsibilities include conducting comprehensive patient assessments, developing and implementing individualized care plans, and evaluating patient responses to interventions. The nurse provides direction and supervision to Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN/LPNs), nursing assistants, unit secretaries, and other clinical or clerical associates, ensuring adherence to established standards and protocols.
By assignment, the nurse may function as a charge nurse for the unit, overseeing shift operations, delegating tasks, and coordinating patient flow. This includes managing staffing assignments, facilitating communication among team members, and addressing any immediate clinical or operational issues.
The role involves provision of patient care and service to older adolescents, young adults, adults, and geriatric populations. The nurse must demonstrate competence in age-specific care, including assessment, treatment, and communication tailored to the developmental and physiological needs of each age group.
Additional duties include maintaining accurate documentation, participating in quality improvement initiatives, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to promote patient safety and satisfaction. The nurse is expected to uphold professional standards, adhere to regulatory requirements, and engage in ongoing learning and development as part of the nursing internship program.
