Master of Social Work (MSW) Student Volunteer (Fall )

As a Master of Social Work (MSW) Student Volunteer with the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, you will support the office's dual role as both local and federal prosecutor for the nation's capital. Your responsibilities will involve assisting with cases that range from local misdemeanors and homicides to federal matters including child pornography, gang activity, financial fraud, and terrorism. You will also contribute to civil litigation representation for the district. Your work will focus on providing social work expertise to legal teams, which may include conducting client assessments, preparing psychosocial reports, and offering insights on victim and witness support. You will collaborate with attorneys and staff to ensure that social work perspectives are integrated into case strategies, particularly in cases involving vulnerable populations. Additionally, you may assist with community outreach and resource coordination, helping to connect individuals with appropriate social services. You will be expected to maintain high standards of professionalism and confidentiality while working in a fast-paced legal environment. Your role will involve writing detailed reports, summarizing case information, and contributing to the development of case-related materials. You will also participate in team meetings and case discussions, providing input based on your social work training. This volunteer position offers hands-on experience in applying social work principles within a legal setting, allowing you to develop skills in crisis intervention, advocacy, and interdisciplinary collaboration. You will gain exposure to the intersection of social work and the justice system, working on cases that have significant community impact.

Applicants must be first or second year Master of Social Work (MSW) students enrolled in a degree program. Candidates must have outstanding academic records, superior writing skills, and be in good academic standing at their university. A minimum GPA of 3.0 or ranking in the top half of the class is required. Student volunteers must be United States citizens or owe permanent allegiance to the United States (currently, natives of American Samoa, Swains Island, and certain inhabitants of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are the only groups that owe permanent allegiance).
