The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Medical Unit New Graduate Internship Program advocates for and utilizes the nursing process in the care of all age populations along the health continuum. The nursing process includes assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation derived from scientific, evidence-based knowledge. The RN partners with the patient, family, and care team to provide holistic care and achieve the best possible outcomes, recognizing that each plays an integral role in that care.
Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting comprehensive patient assessments, including physical, psychological, social, and cultural factors, to develop individualized care plans.
- Administering medications and treatments as prescribed, monitoring patient responses, and adjusting care as needed.
- Collaborating with interdisciplinary team members, including physicians, therapists, and social workers, to coordinate patient care and discharge planning.
- Educating patients and families about health conditions, treatment plans, and self-care strategies to promote wellness and prevent complications.
- Documenting patient care accurately and timely in electronic health records, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
- Participating in quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based practice projects to enhance patient outcomes and safety.
- Providing emotional support and advocacy for patients and families, respecting their values, preferences, and needs.
- Supervising and delegating tasks to licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and nursing assistants as appropriate, ensuring safe and effective care delivery.
- Responding to emergencies and changes in patient condition, initiating appropriate interventions and escalating concerns.
- Engaging in ongoing professional development through the internship program, including orientation, preceptorship, and educational sessions.
- Adhering to infection control protocols, safety standards, and ethical guidelines in all aspects of practice.
- Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe patient care environment.
