As a Graduate Student Research Assistant at the Federal Judicial Center, you will support the agency's mission to conduct research and provide continuing education for the federal courts. Your primary responsibilities include assisting with research projects in social and behavioral sciences, such as psychology, sociology, or political science. You will work under the guidance of senior researchers to design studies, collect and analyze data, and prepare reports. Your duties involve using statistical software like SAS, SPSS, STATA, or R to manage and interpret quantitative data. You will also utilize database management programs such as Excel, Access, or FileMaker to organize and maintain research datasets. Strong writing skills are essential for drafting research summaries, literature reviews, and other documentation. You will collaborate with a team of researchers and staff, requiring effective interpersonal and communication skills to contribute to group discussions and project coordination. Depending on the semester, you will commit to a set schedule: 30 to 39 hours per week during the summer (minimum eight weeks) or 12 to 15 hours per week during spring or fall semesters. Your work will be conducted at the Center's location in Washington, D.C., and you will adhere to a maximum of 39 hours per week. This role provides hands-on experience in a research environment, allowing you to apply your academic knowledge to real-world judicial research.

To qualify for this position, you must be currently enrolled full-time in a graduate degree program in a social or behavioral science discipline, such as psychology, sociology, or political science, at an accredited educational institution. You need experience working in a research environment, whether as a paid employee, intern, volunteer, or as part of a graduate school program. Proficiency in statistical programs such as SAS, SPSS, STATA, or R is required. Knowledge of database management programs like Excel, Access, or FileMaker is also necessary. Strong writing skills are essential, along with strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work collaboratively.
