Basic requirements include a degree in operations research, or at least 24 semester hours in a combination of operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, mathematical logic, science, or subject-matter courses requiring substantial competence in college-level mathematics or statistics. At least 3 of the 24 semester hours must have been in calculus. For GS-7: completion of a 4-year bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with documented Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) at the undergraduate level, defined as a GPA of 2.95 or higher overall, or 3.45 or higher in the major field. For GS-9: completion of 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent, with a GPA of 2.95 or higher overall, or 3.45 or higher in the major field. If more than 10 percent of total undergraduate credit hours are non-graded (e.g., pass/fail, CLEP, CCAF, DANTES, military credit), you cannot qualify based on GPA. Required knowledge, skills, and abilities include: professional operations research knowledge of scientific methods and techniques to analyze systems, processes, and operational problems; ability to analyze, interpret, and apply operations research rules and procedures and recommend effective solutions; ability to perform extensive inquiry into basic data to discover facts or fundamental relationships; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and knowledge of computer operations.
