Recent Law Graduates - Entry-Level Public Defender

As an entry-level public defender with Texas RioGrande Public Defender (TRGPD), you will provide legal representation to indigent defendants charged under Operation Lone Star in rural Texas counties. Your primary responsibilities include managing a caseload of criminal defense cases from initial appearance through resolution, including trials, plea negotiations, and appeals. You will conduct client interviews, investigate case facts, review evidence, and develop defense strategies. You will appear in court for hearings, motions, and trials, advocating for clients' rights and ensuring due process. You will collaborate with senior attorneys, investigators, and support staff to build strong cases. You will also engage with local communities and stakeholders to promote fair and effective indigent defense services. The role requires travel between office locations and court appearances in multiple counties within the service area. You will work in a team-oriented environment focused on providing high-quality legal representation to underserved populations.

Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school. Admission to the Texas State Bar or eligibility for immediate admission. Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills. Ability to manage multiple cases and work under deadlines. Commitment to public service and indigent defense. Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to multiple counties. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required. No prior legal experience required; recent law graduates are encouraged to apply.
