Job purpose
The Senior Tax Accountant plays a key role in delivering high-quality tax services and building strong client relationships. This role combines hands-on tax preparation with technical review, proactive tax planning, and mentorship of team members. The Senior Tax Accountant serves as a trusted advisor to clients, providing accurate, compliant, and thoughtful tax guidance that supports their financial and business goals throughout the year.
While tax season brings periods of increased workload, this role offers a more balanced alternative to the traditional public accounting environment, with an emphasis on sustainable workloads and work-life balance throughout the year.
Essential Functions
As a BELAY Corporate Team member, you will professionally represent the company in all virtual and in-person interactions. You are expected to exemplify our mission, vision, and core values while fostering a collaborative and positive team environment.
Client Service & Tax Advisory
Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned clients, providing timely and responsive tax support
Prepare and review complex individual, partnership, and corporate tax returns
Conduct tax planning and projections for individuals and businesses throughout the year
Research and resolve federal and state tax matters, including correspondence with the IRS and state agencies
Identify tax-saving opportunities and provide proactive recommendations based on client needs
Build and maintain strong relationships with clients and internal partners
Technical Expertise & Quality
Review tax returns and supporting workpapers prepared by team members to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance
Research complex tax matters and provide technical guidance as needed
Support Tax Managersand the Director with technical research, client matters, and special projects
Stay current on changes to federal and state tax laws and communicate relevant updates to clients and team members
Maintain consistent quality standards across tax preparation and review activities
Team Support & Mentorship
Provide guidance, coaching, and technical feedback to staff accountants
Assist with training team members on tax, technical, and procedural topics
Share best practices and resources to support consistency and knowledge across the team
Identify opportunities to improve team efficiency, processes, and quality
Workflow & Process Management
Manage multiple client engagements and deadlines simultaneously
Maintain accurate time tracking, workflow updates, and documentation within firm systems
Coordinate priorities and communicate proactively when deadlines, client needs, or risks arise
Identify opportunities to improve internal processes and leverage technology to increase efficiency
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
3-6 years of progressive tax accounting experience
Experience preparing and reviewing individual, partnership, and corporate tax returns
Experience with tax planning, projections, and tax research
Strong working knowledge of federal and state tax laws, financial statements, and accounting principles
Experience managing multiple client engagements or priorities within established deadlines
Proficiency with tax preparation software, QuickBooks Online, Microsoft Excel, and workflow management tools
Preferred Qualifications
Certified Public Accountant(CPA) license or Enrolled Agent (EA) designation
Public accounting, outsourced accounting, or other client-service experience
Experience supporting small and mid-sized businesses or startups
Experience with Thomson Reuters UltraTax
Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks Online

Working Conditions
BELAYis a remote-first organization. This role requires a dedicated home office, regular use of virtual collaboration tools, and a work schedule that aligns with business needs and BELAY's core collaboration hours. Occasional travel or flexibility outside standard business hours may be required based on the role.

Compensation
Salary Range: $75k-$85k
Location Requirements:
This role is fully remote within the U.S. *Eastern or Central Time Zone*. However, due to employment and tax compliance considerations, we are currently unable to hire employees in the following states: California, New York, Illinois, Oregon.
