Recreation Therapist

The Recreation Therapist applies knowledge of recreation therapy concepts, principles, and practices to treat the physical, mental, emotional, and social needs of individual patients, groups of patients, and families. The role involves using recreational modalities to maintain or rehabilitate patients' physical and/or mental health. The incumbent must be knowledgeable about the residential level of care. Key responsibilities include assessing patients' needs and developing individualized treatment plans that incorporate recreational activities to address specific therapeutic goals. The therapist implements and evaluates these plans, adjusting interventions as needed to promote patient progress. They facilitate group and individual sessions, using activities such as arts and crafts, sports, games, music, and community outings to enhance patients' functional abilities, social skills, and emotional well-being. The Recreation Therapist collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, including physicians, nurses, social workers, and other therapists, to integrate recreation therapy into overall patient care. They document patient progress, maintain accurate records, and communicate findings to the treatment team. Additionally, the therapist educates patients and families on the benefits of recreation therapy and provides guidance on continuing therapeutic activities outside of sessions. The position requires adherence to professional standards and ethical guidelines, including those set by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC). The therapist ensures a safe and supportive environment during all activities, adapting interventions to accommodate patients' physical and cognitive limitations. They also stay current with best practices in recreation therapy through ongoing professional development.

Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English. Education: A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major in therapeutic recreation or recreation/leisure, with an option and/or emphasis in therapeutic recreation, approved by the NCTRC; OR a bachelor's degree or higher in any field from an accredited college, combined with certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). Certification: Must be certified in recreation therapy as a CTRS by the NCTRC.
