Librarian

The Librarian is responsible for acquiring, processing, and managing library materials related to the China Section within the Asian and Middle Eastern Division. Key duties include applying metadata rules and procedures to catalog and organize collections, ensuring accurate bibliographic access. The role involves using integrated library platforms and other information technology to maintain and enhance library systems. The librarian will develop and maintain professional relationships, providing consultation and liaison services to support research and collection development. Additionally, the position requires communicating effectively in Chinese, English, and preferably Mongolian or Tibetan, both in writing and orally, to collaborate with colleagues and patrons. The librarian will also contribute to the knowledge base of history, politics, literature, and culture of greater China, supporting the division's mission to preserve and provide access to diverse materials.

Progressively responsible experience and training sufficient to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas: ability to communicate in Chinese, English, and preferably Mongolian or Tibetan; knowledge of library metadata rules, practices, and procedures; ability to acquire and process library materials; ability to use library software applications, integrated library platforms, and other information technology; ability to communicate in writing; knowledge of history, politics, literature, and culture of greater China; ability to develop and maintain relationships and provide consultation and liaison services; ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.
